Having a good reputation is important. Living a good life in faith is important too. Preparing for death by focusing on our relationship with God and people rather than getting stuff for ourselves is important. Its what we do with and in our lives, not the things we accumulate in life that matters.
Because God knows everything, He knows our past, our present and our future. He knows our needs and can help us. Knowing doesn’t mean God determined ahead of time our actions. The Christian faith is not fatalistic like Islam. Christians live in faith that God who knows everything is also the God who can help us face anything. So we can put our Hope in Him.
Life is not about the stuff we have or don’t have. Life is about living. Life is not about dreaming about what we want. It is celebrating what we have. Even if we don’t have a lot of stuff, we have the Lord God who loves us and gives us life. That’s what really counts.
It is too easy to try to live for the future, which is uncertain, or regretting the past that we can’t change. Proverbs encourages to live our lives right now and enjoy the blessings we have from God now. Good advice.
The stock market took a major hit over the past two weeks. Some people lost money they had invested. Putting our hope in money is a false hope. People who have a lot of money are never satisfied. They always want more. True hope is in God and from God, not in things that do not last. Where is your hope?
Solomon warns us about making empty promises to God. We are all sinful and fall short at times. God still loves and forgives us. But we shouldn’t make promises we have no intentions of keeping. That is hypocrisy. When we make promises to God we should ask for God’s help to keep our promises.
Poltical power doesn’t last. A person in power is foolish to ignore wise advice or the wisdom of God’s Word. It is better to be a follower of Jesus than to be politically correct and turn your back on God. As the disciples told the religious leaders in Jerusalem, “We must obey God rather than men!”
Genesis tells us it is not good for a person to be alone. Solomon reminds us that us of the same thing. What good is is it to work hard and gain possessions by have no one two share them with. Two are better than one. A triple braided cord is not easily broken.
Tornado sirens sound warning us about a potential danger. Weather alerts are issued warning us about potential storms. Traffic conditions are reported warning us about slow downs ahead. Ecclesiastes is full of warnings. This section warns us about the dangers of oppression and greed. The wise person pays attention to warnings.
There are a lot of scary things in life. For the person of faith God is not one of them. Ecclesiastes tells us that God’s purpose is for people to “fear” Him. That doesn’t mean to be afraid, but to worship, honor, respect, serve, trust and follow Him. Because God loves us and wants the best for us, we don’t need to be scared by Him or afraid of Him. We can trust Him and walk with Him in faith.
