Kids should pay attention to their parents and follow their advice. That means that parents need to honor the Lord by teaching by word and example what it means to know, trust and follow the Lord God. Too many parents are not doing that today. So too many young people do not know or follow Jesus. We don’t deprive our kids of things or opportunities, why would we deprive them of the opportunity to know and follow Jesus?
These verses tell us seven things God detests:
Proud, arrogant eyes and attitude
Killing or hurting the innocent
Plotting to do evil
Running to do wrong
A false witness who lies
Sowing discord in a family
Don’t do these things!
Proverbs says that worthless, wicked people lie constantly. Instead of trying to lie our way out of a situation, we should tell the truth. The words of a liar are useless because we never know if or when we can believe them. We need to practice being people who tell the truth.
Ants are annoying. They show up uninvited at picnics. They crawl all over the place looking for food. They store up enough food to survive the winter. Proverbs says learn from the ant. Don’t be a lazy bones. Work while you can to provide for yourself and your family.
Don’t put you or your family at risk by co-signing on a loan for someone you don’t know well. Help people, yes. Give to feed the poor yes. Take on another person’s debt, no. That’s just common sense.
I did not get to read or reflect on Proverbs yesterday because the HART team was called out to give rehab support to fire fighters on the scene of a structure fire. We were able to feed the hungry, give drinks to the thirsty and show our First Responders how important they are to our community. I think that is what Jesus wants us to do.
I have visited people in jails and been very close to the cells. Even though I’m only visiting and know I can leave any time I want, I don’t feel very free at the time. We want to be free to do whatever it is we want to do, but that is foolishness if we want to do the wrong things. Sins enslave us and hold us captive. They can’t set us free. Only God’s love and forgiveness in Jesus Christ can set us free.
God’s love is inclusive, reaching out to all people. The sexual relationship is or at least should be exclusive, reserved for one man and one woman in marriage. That is God’s design for and gift to a married couple. Things go wrong when people forget or reject God’s plan. The Good News is that God still loves and is ready to forgive those who don’t follow God’s plan.
It happens, but it shouldn’t. It happens with far to many people: preachers, politicians, doctors, lawyers, teachers, coaches. What is ‘It?’ It is an affair. It is seeing a prostitute. It is getting exposed and paying a heavy price that may include the loss of almost everything. Proverbs warns, don’t go there. Stay as far away from that temptation and trap as possible. If you are married remain emotionally, physically and totally faithful to your spouse. If you aren’t married remain faithful to your future spouse. That’s God’s plan and design and it works.
Danger! Keep Out! Proverbs shouts out the danger of immoral people. They may look good and seem enticing, but they are bad news. They’ll lead you down the path of misery, not pleasure. Stay away from them. Walk the path of faith and faithfulness.
